OK, I don't like this

Anyone who knows me knows I dislike change, particularly when it is unannounced, and Google has just decided to change Blogger. There are lots of spiffy new features I will probably never use, and of course, it is no longer supported by the browser on my home computer, which means either all posting will have to be done at the office, or I have to plunk down fifteen hundred dollars or so for a new laptop. (Updating to Windows XP on my 11-year-old desktop, a prerequisite for a new browser, makes no sense and would probably overload the hard drive.) Right now, I am having trouble navigating the new set up. I found the "new post" tab pretty much by accident. I guess what I'm trying to say is, 1) it may be a while before I feel comfortable enough to get back to posting on an even half-way regular basis. And 2) damn you, Google, couldn't you leave well enough alone? Ugh. My life is horrid at the moment. The ceiling in my bathroom will not stop leaking, everything I own seems to be on its last legs, and I cannot afford to either move or replace anything. The last thing I need is more surprises.

The weird thing? You may think you're seeing spiffy new features, but they're all features you didn't notice previously. I've seen no new features in the new blogger interface other than the presentation of the blogstats. I've complained internally about interface changes that make Blogger less functional.

That said, $1500 for a new computer? You need not spend that much. Keep an eye on woot.com for a couple of months; they regularly have desktop and laptop machine in the sub-$600 range. Alternatively, do a Google search on this term, where you substitute what you are able to pay for [your price point]:

computers under [your price point]

I have completely given up Microsoft. I use NeoOffice on my home Macintosh; the Windows equivalent is Apache OpenOffice, which is free and MS Office compatible. Full info about OpenOffice is here.

More purchasing advice from a woman who once told me, in effect, that the only way to fully appreciate the Ring on CD is to buy every recording in existence. Whenever I get a comment from you, L, I always want to respond, "Yes, of course, right - but you know what I mean."

I never told you that. And I should have known better than to respond to this posting at all. It won't happen again, since you are (again) putting words in my mouth and assuming I can read your mind - which I definitely can't.

I don't see what the point of downloading Apache would be. What I seem to need is an entirely new platform, not a way to do spreadsheets.

A couple of your comments seem to be gone - I'm sorry you've been having a rough time and I hope I haven't made it worse. Happy to answer any questions about computers and software if you want.

At this point I'm not sure I'm going to keep the blog going.
